The Samokov dialect is a Bulgarian dialect, member of the Southwestern Bulgarian dialects, which is spoken in the region of Samokov in central western Bulgaria. Its immediate neighbours are the Sofia dialect and Elin Pelin dialect to the north, the Ihtiman dialect to the east, the Dupnitsa dialect to the west and the Razlog dialect to the south.
Phonological and morphological characteristics
- Vowel a for Old Church Slavonic ë (yus), àand ÃÂ: üðö vs. formal Bulgarian üÃÂö (man), ÃÂðý vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂý (sleep).
- Limited number of o reflexes of Old Church Slavonic àin the suffix -ÃÂú, the prefixes òÃÂ÷ and ÃÂàand the prepositions òÃÂò, òÃÂ÷ and ÃÂÃÂÃÂ: ÃÂþàýõóþ vs. Standard Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂàýõóþ (with him), ýðÿÃÂõôþú vs. Standard Bulgarian ýðÿÃÂõôÃÂú (progress).
- Limited number of u reflexes of yus: üÃÂúð vs. Standard Bulgarian üÃÂúð (sorrow)
- Schwa () for Old Church Slavonic ûÃÂ/ûàbefore non-labial consonants and u before labial consonants (as in the Ihtiman dialect): ÃÂÃÂ÷ð vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂû÷ð (tear), òÃÂýð vs. formal Bulgarian òÃÂûýð (wool)
- ÃÂ/öô (/) for Proto-Slavic / (as in Standard Bulgarian) - ûõÃÂð, üõöôà(lentils, between). The reflex in sevõral villages and partially in the town of Samokov is, however, ÃÂà, i.e. ûõÃÂÃÂð
- Presence of soft consonants at the end of the word
- Single masculine definite article -o: óðÃÂ'ñþ vs. Standard Bulgarian óÃÂÃÂ'ñÃÂà(the back).
- Ending -ü in verbs of all conjugations (as in the Sofia dialect): ÃÂõ'ÃÂõü vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂõÃÂ'à(I read)
