The Sofia dialect is a Bulgarian dialect, member of the Northwestern Bulgarian dialects, which is spoken in western part of the Sofia valley by part of the Shopi. Its immediate neighbours are the Vratsa dialect to the north, the Elin Pelin dialect to the east, the Transitional dialects to the west and the Samokov dialect to the south.
Phonological and morphological characteristics
- Vowel for Old Church Slavonic ë (yus), àand ÃÂ, as in Standard Bulgarian: üÃÂö [ÃÂmäÃÂ] (man), ÃÂÃÂý [ÃÂsän] (sleep).
- Limited number of o [ÃÂ] reflexes of Old Church Slavonic à(back yer): in the suffix -ÃÂú [äk], the prefixes òÃÂ÷ [väz] and ÃÂà[sä] and the prepositions òÃÂò, òÃÂ÷ and ÃÂÃÂÃÂ: ÃÂþàýõóþ [sÃÂs ÃÂnegÃÂ] vs. Standard Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂàýõóþ [säs ÃÂnego] (with him), ýðÿÃÂõôþú [naÃÂpredÃÂk] vs. Standard Bulgarian ýðÿÃÂõôÃÂú [nÃÂÃÂpredÃÂk] (progress)
- ÃÂ/öô (~) for Proto-Slavic ~ (as in Standard Bulgarian) - ûõÃÂð, üõöôà[ÃÂlÃÂÃÂta], [mÃÂÃÂÃÂdu] (lentils, between). The future tense particle, however, is ÃÂõ: ÃÂõ ÃÂõ'ÃÂõüõ [táÃÂàÃÂtáÃÂÃÂtÃÂme] vs. Standard Bulgarian ÃÂõ ÃÂõÃÂõü [ÃÂtàtáÃÂÃÂÃÂtÃÂm] (we will read)
- ÃÂà() and ûà() for Old Church Slavonic groups ÃÂÃÂ~ÃÂàand ûÃÂ~ûàversus formal Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂ~ÃÂà(~) and ûÃÂ~ÃÂû (~): ôÃÂÃÂòþ, ÃÂûÃÂ÷ð [dräÃÂvÃÂ], [släÃÂza] instead of formal Bulgarian ôÃÂÃÂòþ, ÃÂÃÂû÷ð [dÃÂrÃÂvÃÂ], [sÃÂlÃÂza] (tree, tear).
- Ending -ü [m] in 1st person sg. present tense for verbs of all conjugations: ÃÂõÃÂõü [ÃÂtáÃÂÃÂtÃÂm] vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂõÃÂ'à[táÃÂÃÂÃÂtä] (I read)
- Lack of ending -àin the forms for 3rd person pl. present tense: ÃÂôð [ÃÂjada] vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂôÃÂà[jÃÂÃÂdät] (they eat)
- Personal pronouns for 3rd person þý [ÃÂn], þýð [ÃÂÃÂna], þýþ [ÃÂÃÂnÃÂ], þýø [ÃÂÃÂni], as in Old Bulgarian (ÃÂþù [tÃÂj], ÃÂà[tòa], ÃÂþ [tÃÂ], ÃÂõ [tÃÂ] in Standard Bulgarian)
