The Dupnitsa dialect is a Bulgarian dialect, member of the Southwestern Bulgarian dialects, which is spoken in the region of Dupnitsa in central western Bulgaria. It is transitional between the Samokov dialect to the east and the Blagoevgrad-Petrich dialect to the south.
Phonological and morphological characteristics
- ÃÂ/öô (/) for Proto-Slavic / (as in Standard Bulgarian) - ûõÃÂð, üõöôà(lentils, between). The future tense particle, however, is ÃÂõ: ÃÂõ ÃÂõ'ÃÂõüe vs. Standard Bulgarian ÃÂõ ÃÂõÃÂõü (we will read)
- Vowel a for Old Bulgarian ë (yus): üðö vs. formal Bulgarian üÃÂö (man). Limited number of u reflexes of yus (as in the Samokov dialect): üÃÂúð vs. Standard Bulgarian üÃÂúð (sorrow)
- Vowel o for Old Bulgarian àin suffixes and prefixes and some roots and a in other roots: ÃÂþàýõóþ vs. Standard Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂàýõóþ (with him), ñþÃÂòð vs. Standard Bulgarian ñÃÂÃÂòð (cask) but òðÃÂúð vs. Standard Bulgarian òÃÂÃÂúð (louse)
- Vocalic r for Old Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂ/ÃÂàinstead of the combination ÃÂÃÂ/ÃÂà(/) in Standard Bulgarian - ôÃÂòþ instead of ôÃÂÃÂòþ (tree).
- The reflex of Old Bulgarian ûÃÂ/ûàis:
Before non-labial consonants - schwa () in the southern subdialect and vocalic l in the northern subdialect: ÃÂÃÂ÷ð/ÃÂû÷ð vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂÃÂû÷ð
Before labial consonants - u: òÃÂýð vs. formal Bulgarian òÃÂûýð (wool)
- Preserved consonant ÃÂ
() in all positions, except the beginning of the word: ÃÂÃÂÃÂ
(I heard), þôø (walks)
- Verb ending -ü in verbs of the first and second conjugation: ÃÂõÃÂ'õü vs. formal Bulgarian ÃÂõÃÂ'à(I read)
- Adverbial participle on -õùúø/ðùúø (as in Standard Bulgarian): øóÃÂðõùúø (while playing)
- Dynamic stress
