De Soto Township is named for Hernando de Soto, the discoverer of the Mississippi River.

The racial makeup of the township was 87.49% White, 3.79% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 7.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.23% of the population.
