AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn () is an early juridical Qur'ÃÂnic exegesis authored by the ShÃÂfi'ë scholar Al-Kiyàal-ḤarrÃÂsë (d. 504/1110). It is regarded as one of the most important works within the ShÃÂfi'ë school of Islamic law and the earliest complete tafsër al-aḥkÃÂm to have survived from this tradition. The work systematically interprets the ÃÂyÃÂt al-aḥkÃÂm (legal verses) of the Qur'ÃÂn according to ShÃÂfiÿë legal principles, offering evidential support for the schoolâÂÂs rulings while engaging critically with the positions of other madhÃÂhib, particularly the Ḥanafë school. AḥkÃÂm al-Qur'ÃÂn is classified as al-Tafsir al-Tahlili (analytical commentary).
Al-Kiyàal-HarrÃÂsë composed AḥkÃÂm al-Qur'ÃÂn with the objective of elucidating the methodological approach employed by al-ShÃÂfi'ë in deriving intricate legal rulings from the revealed texts. His work aimed to demonstrate, through detailed exegetical reasoning, the soundness and coherence of al-ShÃÂfi'ë's interpretive method in jurisprudence.
The composition of this tafsër also served as a direct intellectual response to the strong sectarian bias exhibited by al-JaṣṣÃÂá¹£ in his own AḥkÃÂm al-Qur'ÃÂn. Al-HarrÃÂsë perceived the necessity of addressing the criticisms and polemical assertions that al-JaṣṣÃÂá¹£ had advanced against ImÃÂm al-ShÃÂfiÿë. Through his own legal-oriented exegesis, al-HarrÃÂsë sought to defend the ShÃÂfi'ë school and to reassert the methodological and theological validity of its principles.
The underlying motivation for this work lies in al-HarrÃÂsë's commitment to fortifying the legal school to which he adhered. By composing AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn, he intended to tarjëḥ (prefer and substantiate) particular legal opinions within the ShÃÂfi'ë tradition, especially those which ImÃÂm al-ShÃÂfiÿë himself had not treated exhaustively.
This objective is explicitly reflected in the introduction (muqaddimah) of the work, where al-HarrÃÂsë reveals his pronounced devotion to the ShÃÂfiÿë school. In his preface, he declares:

âÂÂIndeed, the ShÃÂfiÿë madhhab is the most upright and correct, the best and the wisest. All the views of the ShÃÂfiÿë madhhab surpass the bounds of conjecture (áºÂann), attaining the level of certainty (yaqën).âÂÂ

He further clarifies the rationale behind his composition, stating:

âÂÂWhen I came to recognize the excellence of the ShÃÂfië school in all its aspects, I authored AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn as an explanatory commentary of this madhhab.âÂÂ

The exegetical (tafsër) method employed by al-Kiyàal-HarrÃÂsë can be summarized in the following six orders:
The features of Tafsër AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn include the following:
The work AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn by al-Kiyàal-HarrÃÂsë is regarded as one of the most significant contributions within the ShÃÂfiÿë school, particularly in the domain of tafsër fiqhë (juridical exegesis). It represents the earliest extant and comprehensive work of its kind in the ShÃÂfiÿë tradition that has survived to the present day. Although another AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn is attributed to ImÃÂm al-ShÃÂfiÿë himself and later compiled by al-Bayhaqi, that version does not encompass all of the ÃÂyÃÂt al-aḥkÃÂm (legal verses) in their entirety.
The tafsër AḥkÃÂm al-QurþÃÂn of al-Kiyàal-HarrÃÂsë exists in a large manuscript preserved in Egyptian National Library and Archives and Al-Azhar library. In 1974, the book was critically edited (taḥqëq) by Mà «sàMuḥammad ÿAlë and ÿIzzat ÿAbd al-ÿAá¹Âiyyah, and published in Cairo by DÃÂr al-Kutub al-Ḥadëthah. It was also printed by DÃÂr al-Kutub al-ÿIlmiyyah in Beirut in 1405 AH / 1985 CE. The work comprises four parts (juzþ), compiled into two volumes, measuring 24 cm in size.
