The three substrates of this enzyme are succinic semialdehyde, oxidised nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD<sup>+</sup>) and water. Its products are succinic acid, reduced NADH, and a proton. This enzyme can use the alternative cofactor, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate.
