It forms the ranelate ion, C<sub>12</sub>H<sub>6</sub>N<sub>2</sub>O<sub>8</sub>S<sup>4âÂÂ</sup>. Strontium ranelate, the strontium salt of ranelic acid, is a drug used to treat osteoporosis and increase bone mineral density (BMD).
