Medronic acid (conjugate base, medronate), also known as methylene diphosphonate, is the smallest bisphosphonate. Its complex with radioactive technetium, <sup>99m</sup>Tc medronic acid, is used in nuclear medicine to detect bone abnormalities, including metastases.
