Echinenone is a xanthophyll, with formula C<sub>40</sub>H<sub>54</sub>O. It is found in some cyanobacteria. It is synthesized from ò-carotene by the enzyme beta-carotene ketolase (or CrtW). It has also been isolated from sea urchins.
