Synthesis and reactions

It can be prepared by

• Jones oxidation or Dess-Martin oxidation of cyclooctanol.
• ketonization reaction starting with azelaic acid.

Among its many reactions, Baeyer-Villiger oxidation gives the nine-membered cyclic ester.
