Yasmeen Ghauri

Yasmeen Ghauri ( ) is a Canadian former fashion model. She had a prominent career in the 1990s, modeling for major fashion houses and appearing in campaigns and editorials for international magazines.

Early life

Yasmeen Ghauri was born on 23 March 1971 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to a German mother and a Pakistani father. She was raised in a conservative household and had a relatively ordinary upbringing before entering the fashion industry.

As a teenager, she worked at a McDonald's restaurant in Montreal. At the age of 17, she was discovered by hairstylist and talent scout Edward Zaccaria while leaving work. Her decision to pursue modelling initially met resistance from her family, particularly due to cultural expectations.

Early in her career, Ghauri was considered "too ethnic" by some in the fashion industry, reflecting the limited diversity of the period. Despite these challenges, she went on to build an international modelling career.

Career

Ghauri’s breakthrough came during a period when the fashion industry was still largely dominated by Eurocentric beauty standards. Initially considered "too ethnic" by some casting directors, she went on to become one of the most visible and influential models of the decade, helping to broaden representation on international runways.

She became a favourite of leading designers including Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld and Thierry Mugler, and was widely recognized for her strong runway walk and commanding presence. Ghauri also worked with prominent fashion photographers such as Steven Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier, appearing in major editorial spreads and campaigns.

Ghauri became known for her distinctive runway walk, characterized by a fluid, hip-driven motion and a confident yet controlled presence. Described by Vogue as having a “vivacious strut,” her style balanced strength and elegance, setting her apart from contemporaries such as Naomi Campbell, whose walk emphasized power and impact, and Kate Moss, who became associated with a more minimal and understated runway style.

During the early stages of her career, Ghauri also highlighted structural limitations within the fashion industry regarding diversity. Due to the lack of suitable foundation shades for her skin tone, she reportedly did her own makeup during shoots, reflecting broader issues of inclusivity in the modelling and beauty industries at the time.

Throughout the early 1990s, she appeared on the cover of international editions of Vogue and became one of the first South Asian models to achieve global prominence. She also secured major contracts, including work with luxury fashion houses and a role as one of the early figures associated with Victoria's Secret, further expanding her visibility in both high fashion and commercial markets.

Ghauri also expanded her presence beyond runway modelling through appearances in visual media. In 1990, she starred alongside Chris Isaak in the music video for "Sacrifice" by Elton John, directed by Alek Keshishian. In the video, she portrays a woman in a troubled relationship, contributing to the narrative-driven style of the production.

She later appeared in the 1995 fashion documentary Unzipped, directed by Isaac Mizrahi, which provided a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry and the creative process behind runway collections.

Known for her versatility, Ghauri was especially prominent on the runway, where she became a key figure for major fashion houses during the peak of the supermodel era. Her success contributed to a broader shift toward diversity in the modelling industry during the 1990s.

At the height of her career, Ghauri chose to retire from modelling in 1997, stepping away from the industry to focus on her personal life. Despite her relatively short career, she is widely regarded as one of the defining models of the 1990s and a pioneer for greater ethnic diversity in fashion.

Personal life

Ghauri is married to lawyer Ralph Bernstein, with whom she has two children.

Following her retirement from modelling in 1997, she chose to live a private life, largely staying out of the public eye. She has made only limited appearances in media since leaving the fashion industry.
