Wiedemannia iphigeniae

Wiedemannia iphigeniae is a species of aquatic dance fly belonging to the family Empididae, and subfamily Clinocericae, known from its type locality in the Aroania Mountains of the Peloponnese region in Greece.

Taxonomy

Wiedemannia iphigeniae is classified within the kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Diptera, superfamily Empidoidea, family Empididae, subfamily Clinocerinae, genus Wiedemannia, and species Wiedemannia iphigeniae.

Description

Wiedemannia iphigeniae is a small fly species with a body length of approximately 3.5 mm and a wing length of 3.7 mm, based on measurements of the male variety, which was dissected before full measurement and exhibited bleached coloration due to prolonged storage in alcohol.

Overall, the body is brownish in color, with the head, antennae, and legs sharing the same tone. The wing membrane is clear, contrasted by darker veins, while the halter appears pale. The basic body structure includes a head that is higher than long in lateral view, featuring a narrow gena, frons shorter and broader than the face, a mesonotum that bears a pale central vitta, and an abdomen covered in small setae, and legs displaying small rows of dark setulae. Only the male sex has been described for this species, with the female remaining unknown.

Geography

Wiedemannia iphigeniae is endemic to Greece and is currently known exclusively from its type locality in the Peloponnese region. The species was described in 2017 based on a single specimen collected from the Aroania Mountains near Krinofita on 20 April 1990 by collectors B. Horvat and I. Sivec.

Habitat

Wiedemannia iphigeniae exhibits a habitat preference typical of aquatic dance flies, favoring flowing water such as montane streams and springs. Adults are primarily observed in riparian zones near these water bodies, often on surfaces of emergent wet stones or within moss mats along stream edges.
