Whakaawi (<small>:</small> [øakaaÃÂwi]) was a MÃÂori woman of high birth in both the NgÃÂti Te Wehi tribe and NgÃÂti Mahuta tribe, who was the senior wife of the chief Pà Âtatau Te Wherowhero, who died in 1860. His other wives were Waiata, Raharaha and NgÃÂwaero.
Whakaawi gave birth to TÃÂwhiao at Orongokoekoea PÃÂ, about 1825. TÃÂwhiao later became the second MÃÂori King in 1860. Whakaawi's parents, Manu-whaka-aweawe (grandson of Te Wehi of NgÃÂti Te Wehi) and Parekairoro of NgÃÂti Wairere, raised him. It is possible that she was also the mother of Te Paea Tëaho.
King Mahuta, the third MÃÂori King, reigning from 1894 to 1912, was Whakaawi's grandson.
