Waikato District Council

Waikato District Council () is the territorial authority for the Waikato District of New Zealand.

The council is led by the mayor of Waikato, who is currently . There are also ward councillors.

Composition

The council currently consists of a mayor elected at-large and 13 councillors, elected from eight general wards and two Maaori wards.

Tai Raro Takiwaa Maaori ward, Tai Runga Takiwaa Maaori ward, Awaroa-Maramarua general ward, Huntly general ward, Waerenga-Whitikahu general ward, Western Districts general ward and Whāingaroa general ward each return one councillor, while Newcastle-Ngāruawāhia general ward, Tamahere-Woodlands general ward and Tuakau-Pōkeno general ward return two councillors each.

Mayor Aksel Bech was first elected as mayor in 2025, and prior to that was first elected to the council in 2016, but failed to be elected as mayor in 2022.

History

The council was established in 1989, replacing Raglan County Council (established in 1876), Waikato County Council (established in 1876), Ngāruawāhia Borough Council (established in 1920), and Huntly Borough Council (established in 1931).
