Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU; , ÃÂHQGHN, Hán Nôm: ) is a public research university system in Hanoi, Vietnam. The university system has 12 member universities and schools. VNU is one of two Vietnam's national universities, the other one being Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
It was ranked 158th in Asia by the QS University Rankings 2026. For many consecutive years, it has maintained the No.1 position in Viet NamâÂÂs only domestic university ranking system, the VietnamâÂÂs University Rankings (VNUR). It has produced many notable leaders in science, engineering, politics, business, academia, and culture. VNU is one of the most prestigious universities in Vietnam.
The President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi is appointed and dismissed by the Prime Minister of Vietnam. The position belongs to the first-tier leadership group under the management of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and is institutionally equivalent to the rank of Vice Minister of ministries and ministerial-level agencies.
Throughout its history, the university has had several name changes: the University of Indochina (Université Indochinoise, æÂ±æ´Â大å¸ or ÃÂại há»Âc ÃÂông Dðáng; established in 1906), Vietnam National University (Trðá»Âng ÃÂại há»Âc Quá»Âc gia Viá»Ât Nam; November 1945), and the University of Hanoi (Trðá»Âng ÃÂại há»Âc Tá»Âng hợp HàNá»Âi; June 1956). In 1993, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ÃÂại há»Âc Quá»Âc gia HàNá»Âi) was created by merging the University of Hanoi, Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE) and College of Foreign Languages.
This university was home to the country's first business school.
The institution currently owns four high schools - three of which are for gifted students in foreign languages (Foreign Language Specialized School), natural science (High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi University of Science), social science (High School for Gifted Students in Social Sciences and Humanities), and the fourth school (High School of Educational Sciences) applies advanced educational technology in teaching; as well as a middle school (ULIS Middle School).
