The apostrophe in the Ukrainian language is used before the letters ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, when they denote the combination of the consonant // with the vowels //, //, //, // after ñ, ÿ, ò, ü, ÃÂ, àand any solid consonant ending in a prefix or the first part of a compound word.
General rules
The apostrophe is placed before ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ:
- After the letters denoting the labial solid consonant sounds ñ, ÿ, ò, ü, ÃÂ, if they are not preceded by another consonant (except ÃÂ), which would belong to the root: , , , , , , , , , ; , , , , . If the consonant in front of the labial belongs to the prefix, then the apostrophe is also placed: , , , , , .
- After a solid ÃÂ at the end of the composition: , , , , , ; , , .
- After ú in the word and its derivatives: , , .
- After prefixes and the first part of compound words ending in a solid consonant: , , , , , , , , , , , ; , , .
The apostrophe is not placed:
- We do not write an apostrophe when there is another letter (except p) in front of the letter to denote the lip sound, which belongs to the root (base): , , , , , , , , ; but: , , , .
- We do not write an apostrophe when ÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂàmean a combination of soft àwith the following ð, ÃÂ, õ: , , , , , , , , .
- After prefixes with a final consonant before the following ÃÂ, õ, ð, þ, ÃÂ, we do not write the apostrophe: , , , , , .
- We write an apostrophe in words of foreign origin and derivatives before ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, which denote the combination of the sound // with the following vowel:
- After consonants ñ, ÿ, ò, ü, ÃÂ, ó, ú, ÃÂ

- The apostrophe is not spelled:
- In front of the digraph ùo: úÃÂÃÂùþÃÂ÷, ÃÂõÃÂùþÃÂ÷ýøù;
- When ÃÂ, àdenote the softening of the previous consonant before a, y: ñÃÂ÷ÃÂ, ñÃÂôöõÃÂÃÂ, ñÃÂÃÂþÃÂ, úÃÂòõÃÂÃÂ, ÿÃÂÿÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂõ÷ÃÂüé, üÃÂÃÂøÃÂô, ÃÂÃÂ÷õûÃÂÃÂö, ÃÂÃÂú÷ðÃÂú, ÃÂÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂðÃÂñÃÂÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂþÃÂý, ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂõüñõÃÂóÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂÃÂûûõÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂÃÂþÃÂ, àÃÂôñõÃÂÃÂ.
Apostrophe in surnames
The apostrophe is written after the labial, velar and àbefore ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ: ÃÂûÃÂñ'ÃÂò, ÃÂÃÂõÃÂ'ÃÂò, ÃÂþôþÿ'ÃÂýþò, ÃÂ'ÃÂûÃÂÃÂõòð, ÃÂÃÂøóþÃÂ'ÃÂò, ÃÂðÃÂ
ðÃÂ'ÃÂý, ÃÂÃÂñ'ÃÂýÃÂõò, ÃÂÃÂú'ÃÂýþò, ÃÂþü'ÃÂûþòÃÂÃÂúøù, ÃÂÃÂþúþÃÂ'ÃÂò, îÃÂ'ÃÂò; before ùþ the apostrophe is not written: ÃÂþÃÂþñùþò, áþûþòùþò.
Note. When ÃÂ, àmean the combination of a softened consonant a, y, the apostrophe before them is not written: ÃÂÃÂôÃÂûÃÂ, ', àÃÂüÃÂý.
The abbreviated particle "d" and the Irish particle "o" are written with proper names through an apostrophe: ÃÂ'ÃÂûðüñõÃÂ, ÃÂ'ÃÂÃÂÃÂðýÃÂÃÂý, ÃÂ'ÃÂñÃÂýÃÂÃÂ; ÃÂ'ÃÂõýÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂ'ÃÂõùÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂ'ÃÂþýýõùûÃÂ.
Apostrophe in geographical names
The apostrophe is written in geographical names after labial (ü, ÿ, ñ, ÃÂ, ò), velar (ó, ÃÂ, ú, ÃÂ) and ÃÂ, as well as after prefixes ending in a consonant, before ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ, ÃÂ: ÃÂ'ÃÂ÷ýøúø, áúóÿâÂÂÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂþúþÿ'ÃÂòÃÂÃÂú, ÃÂ'ÃÂÃÂøóþÃÂÃÂÃÂú, ÃÂú'ÃÂÃÂ, ÃÂüÃÂôðÃÂ'ÃÂ, ÃÂÃÂÃÂ'ÃÂò; before ùþ the apostrophe is not written: ÃÂÃÂÃÂðòùþòþ.
Note. When ÃÂ, àmean the combination of a softened consonant with // and //, the apostrophe before them is not written: ÃÂÃÂ÷ÃÂüð, ÃÂÃÂÃÂ
