The Toronto Youth Assessment Centre (TYAC) was a provincially operated youth detention centre and assessment facility located in Toronto, Ontario. It was administered by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The Ontario government announced the closure of the centre on March 8, 2004, citing concerns about the buildingâÂÂs condition and its suitability for youth. The facility was scheduled to close by June 30, 2004.
TYAC has been named in a segregation class action lawsuit.
A 16 year old named David Meffe committed suicide in his cell in October 2002 while on suicide watch other inmates had bullied him before his suicide, forcing him to lick spit from the floor and eat excrement from a toilet.
