Taiheiki (太平è¨Â) is a 1991 Japanese historical television series and the 29th NHK taiga drama. It is based on the 1958 novel Shihon Taiheiki by Eiji Yoshikawa. It had an average viewership rating of 26.0%, peaking at 34.6%.
The drama is set at the end of the Kamakura period, going into the Nanboku-chà  period during the early Muromachi period. Ashikaga Takauji, a rising warlord in the north of Japan, forms an alliance with Emperor Go-Daigo to overthrow the corrupt and decrepit Kamakura shogunate. The emperor, seeking to restore Imperial rule, begins the Kenmu Restoration, but fails to please the samurai and cannot dispel their fears of being displaced as the privileged class of Japanese society. Seizing the opportunity, Takauji decides to turn against the Emperor and establish a new shogunate.
