Taekwondo made its debut as an Asian Para Games sport during the 2022 version of the games, held in Hangzhou, China. 77 fighters from 17 nations took part in the competition, fighting in ten weight categories. Competitors qualified under the K44 designation, which includes athletes with unilateral arm amputation or similar imparemnet, or loss of toes affecting the ability to lift the heel.
Before the tournament, Uzbekistan, Iran and Mongolia were favourites to win medals. By the end of the tournament, Iran had won the most medals, followed by China and Uzbekistan, with Mongolia coming fourth. NepalâÂÂs Palesha Goverdhan claimed her countryâÂÂs first ever international medal in Taekwondo, winning a bronze medal in the womenâÂÂs 57kg class.
In the menâÂÂs K44 58kg final, TaiwanâÂÂs Xiao Xiang-wen defeated JapanâÂÂs Mitsuya Tanaka by 27-11.
In the menâÂÂs K44 63kg final MongoliaâÂÂs Ganbat Bolor-Erdene defeated IranâÂÂs Saeid Sadeghianpour by 6-2.
In the menâÂÂs K44 70kg final, IranâÂÂs Mehdi Pourrahnama defeated ChinaâÂÂs Shihe Chen by 16-3.
In the menâÂÂs K44 80kg final, KoreaâÂÂs Joo Jeong-hun defeated IranâÂÂs Alireza Bakht.
In the menâÂÂs K44 +80kg final, IranâÂÂs Hamed Haghshenas defeated KazakhstanâÂÂs Nyshan Omirali.
In the womenâÂÂs 47kg final, ThailandâÂÂs Khwansuda Phuangkitcha defeated UzbekistanâÂÂs Ziyodakhon Isakova by 7-4.
In the womenâÂÂs 52kg final, ChinaâÂÂs Shao Qian defeated MongoliaâÂÂs Surenjav Ulambayar.
In the womenâÂÂs 57kg final, Roza Ebrahimi defeated KazakhstanâÂÂs Kamilya Dosmalova by 34-15.
In the womenâÂÂs 65kg final, ChinaâÂÂs Yao Yinan defeated IranâÂÂs Romina Chamsouraki.
In the womenâÂÂs +65kg final, UzbekistanâÂÂs Guljonoy Naimova defeated IranâÂÂs Leila Mirzaei.
