The municipality of San Juan, the capital of the archipelago and island of Puerto Rico, is divided into 18 barrios, 16 of which were acquired after merging with the former municipality of RÃÂo Piedras in 1951. Eight of the barrios are further divided into subbarrios or districts, including the two barrios that originally comprised the San Juan municipality, namely San Juan Antiguo and Santurce.
