Sootaguse, Vinni Parish

Sootaguse is a village in Vinni Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. Between 1992 and 2017 (until the administrative reform of Estonian municipalities), the village was located in Laekvere Parish.

The village is considered to have a very low population density and an agrarian landscape typical of the surrounding countryside. According to the 2021 census, the village had a population of three residents, an increase from just one recorded in both 2000 and 2011, highlighting its position among the smallest settlements in Estonia.

From an administrative perspective, Sootaguse belonged to Laekvere Parish from 1992 until Estonia's 2017 municipal reform, after which Laekvere, Vinni, and Rägavere were consolidated into the Vinni Parish. The area experiences a humid continental climate, marked by warm summers and cold winters, and continues to function mainly as a residential and agricultural locality, with minimal infrastructure and no prominent landmarks aside from individual farmsteads.

Geography

From an administrative standpoint, Sootaguse falls under the EHAK code 7748, identifying it as a village-level unit within Estonia's formal system of administrative and settlement classification. It borders neighboring villages, including Undla to the north and Laekvere to the south, situating it within a closely linked network of rural communities in Vinni Parish.

In the wake of Estonia's 2017 administrative reform, which consolidated multiple rural municipalities to enhance governance, Sootaguse was reassigned from Laekvere Parish, where it had been part of the administrative structure since 1992, to the enlarged Vinni Parish. This transition resulted from a voluntary merger involving the rural municipalities of Laekvere, Rägavere, and Vinni. Implemented in October 2017, the reform sought to streamline administrative units for greater efficiency and improved service provision, with the expanded municipality retaining the name Vinni parish after its principal settlement.
