On March 20, 2006, Shiga was merged into the expanded city of à Âtsu.
The original village called Shiga (æ»Âè³ instead of å¿Âè³Â) was slightly north of à Âtsu and merged with à Âtsu on May 10, 1932. A new town called Shiga was established on October 1, 1955, upon the mergers of , , and villages, farther north of à Âtsu.
