Rhinatrema koki was first described by Mark Wilkinson and Gabriela B. Bittencourt-Silva in 2025.
The species is named after Philippe J.R. Kok from the University of Lodz, a herpetologist specialising in the study of neotropical amphibians and reptiles.
Rhinatrema koki was found in Guyana, near the Konawaruk River in the former Mazaruni-Potaro region of Guyana.
