Phạm Tuyên

PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn (born 12 January 1930 in HÃ¡ÂºÂ£i DÃÂ°ÃÂ¡ng) is a Vietnamese musician. He served as the head of the music department at Hanoi's Voice of Vietnam Radio during the Vietnam War. PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn composed numerous popular socialist songs, including NhÃÂ° cÃÂ³ BÃÂ¡c HÃ¡Â»Â trong ngÃÂ y vui ÃÂÃ¡ÂºÂ¡i thÃ¡ÂºÂ¯ng ("As If Uncle HÃ¡Â»Â Were Present on the Joyous Day of Great Victory") and ÃÂÃ¡ÂºÂ£ng ÃÂÃÂ£ cho ta mÃÂ¹a xuÃÂ¢n ("The Communist Party Has Given Us Spring").

Biography and career

PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn was born on 12 January 1930 in the rural commune of LÃÂ°ÃÂ¡ng NgÃ¡Â»Âc, BÃÂ¬nh Giang district, HÃ¡ÂºÂ£i HÃÂ°ng province. He was the ninth child of the renowned journalist, scholar, and cultural researcher PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m QuÃ¡Â»Â³nh (1892Ã¢ÂÂ1945), who was executed by the ViÃ¡Â»Ât Minh in 1945.

In 1949, PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn attended the , Course V. In 1950, he served as a company leader (a military unit, not a commercial company) at TrÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âng ThiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿u sinh quÃÂ¢n ViÃ¡Â»Ât Nam (Vietnamese Military School for Children). During this period, he began composing songs, many of which were inspired by his experiences in military schools.

In 1954, he was appointed to oversee literature, sports, and arts at Khu hÃ¡Â»Âc xÃÂ¡ Trung ÃÂ°ÃÂ¡ng (Central Dormitory) in Nam Ninh, China. He returned to Vietnam in 1958 and joined the Voice of Vietnam, where he assumed the role of music editor. Between 1958 and 1975, he composed numerous popular songs, including BÃÂ i ca ngÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âi thÃ¡Â»Â£ rÃ¡Â»Â«ng ("The Song of Lumbermen"), BÃÂ i ca ngÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âi thÃ¡Â»Â£ mÃ¡Â»Â ("The Song of Miners"), the choral piece MiÃ¡Â»Ân Nam anh dÃÂ©ng vÃÂ bÃ¡ÂºÂ¥t khuÃ¡ÂºÂ¥t ("The Heroic and Undaunted South Vietnam"), BÃÂ¡m biÃ¡Â»Ân quÃÂª hÃÂ°ÃÂ¡ng ("Cling to the HomelandÃ¢ÂÂs Sea"), YÃÂªu biÃ¡ÂºÂ¿t mÃ¡ÂºÂ¥y nhÃ¡Â»Â¯ng con ÃÂÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âng ("How I Love the Roads"), ChiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿c gÃ¡ÂºÂy TrÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âng SÃÂ¡n ("The TrÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âng SÃÂ¡n Stick"), GÃ¡ÂºÂ£y ÃÂÃÂ n lÃÂªn hÃ¡Â»Â¡i ngÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âi bÃ¡ÂºÂ¡n MÃ¡Â»Â¹ ("Play the Guitar, My American Friend"), TÃ¡Â»Â« lÃÂ ng Sen ("From Sen Village"), ÃÂÃÂªm trÃÂªn Cha Lo ("Night at Cha Lo"), and TÃ¡Â»Â« mÃ¡Â»Ât ngÃÂ£ tÃÂ° ÃÂÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âng phÃ¡Â»Â ("From a Street Intersection").

The iconic song NhÃÂ° cÃÂ³ BÃÂ¡c HÃ¡Â»Â trong ngÃÂ y vui ÃÂÃ¡ÂºÂ¡i thÃ¡ÂºÂ¯ng ("As If Uncle HÃ¡Â»Â Were Present on the Joyous Day of Great Victory") was composed on the night of 28 April 1975, recorded in the afternoon of the same day, and broadcast in a special newscast at 5 p.m., coinciding with North Vietnam's capture of South Vietnam, marking the official end of the Vietnam War.

After 1975, PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn continued to produce popular songs, including GÃ¡Â»Âi nÃ¡ÂºÂ¯ng cho em ("Sending Sunshine to You"), Con kÃÂªnh ta ÃÂÃÂ o ("The Canal We Dug"), and MÃÂ u cÃ¡Â»Â tÃÂ´i yÃÂªu ("The Flag I Love"), with lyrics by DiÃ¡Â»Âp Minh TuyÃ¡Â»Ân. His song ThÃÂ nh phÃ¡Â»Â mÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âi mÃÂ¹a hoa ("The City of Ten Flower Seasons"), with lyrics by LÃ¡Â»Â BÃÂ¬nh, was composed in 1985.

ChiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿n ÃÂÃ¡ÂºÂ¥u vÃÂ¬ ÃÂÃ¡Â»Âc lÃ¡ÂºÂp tÃ¡Â»Â± do ("Fight for Independence and Freedom") was written at the beginning of the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War. This song marked the beginning of a musical movement known as biÃÂªn giÃ¡Â»Âi phÃÂa BÃ¡ÂºÂ¯c ("The Northern Border"), which honoured the bravery of Vietnamese soldiers who fought against Chinese forces. However, these songs were later withdrawn from circulation after Sino-Vietnamese relations were normalized.

PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn also composed many songs for children and young audiences, some of which became immensely popular, including TiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿n lÃÂªn ÃÂoÃÂ n viÃÂªn ("March Forward, Members of the Communist Youth Union"), ChiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿c ÃÂÃÂ¨n ÃÂ´ng sao ("The Star-shaped Lantern"), HÃÂ nh khÃÂºc ÃÂÃ¡Â»Âi thiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿u niÃÂªn TiÃ¡Â»Ân phong HÃ¡Â»Â ChÃÂ Minh ("March of the HÃ¡Â»Â ChÃÂ Minh Young Pioneer Organization"), HÃÂ¡t dÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Âi cÃ¡Â»Â HÃÂ NÃ¡Â»Âi ("Singing Under HanoiÃ¢ÂÂs Flag"), GÃ¡ÂºÂ·p nhau giÃ¡Â»Â¯a trÃ¡Â»Âi thu HÃÂ NÃ¡Â»Âi ("Meeting in HanoiÃ¢ÂÂs Autumn Sky"), ÃÂÃÂªm phÃÂ¡o hoa ("Fireworks Night"), and CÃÂ´ vÃÂ mÃ¡ÂºÂ¹ ("The Teacher and the Mother").

In addition to his musical works, PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn authored numerous articles on musical aesthetics, songs, and their composers. He was also the initiator and director of many national musical competitions, including TiÃ¡ÂºÂ¿ng hÃÂ¡t hoa phÃÂ°Ã¡Â»Â£ng ÃÂÃ¡Â»Â ("The Song of Red Flamboyant Flowers") and LiÃÂªn hoan VÃÂn nghÃ¡Â»Â truyÃ¡Â»Ân hÃÂ¬nh toÃÂ n quÃ¡Â»Âc ("National Television Arts and Letters Festival"). He served as the President of the Board of Examiners at many national arts festivals organized by the Ministry of Culture and various other institutions.

PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn was a member of the Standing Committee of the Executive Board of the HÃ¡Â»Âi nhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡c sÃÂ© ViÃ¡Â»Ât Nam (Vietnamese Musicians' Association) from 1963 to 1983.

PhÃ¡ÂºÂ¡m TuyÃÂªn retired and currently resides in HÃÂ NÃ¡Â»Âi.
