In Hawaiian mythology, Pakaûa is the god of the wind and the inventor of the sail.
In the legend, Pakaûa was the child of a traveling royal named Kuanuûuanu and a beautiful common woman named Laûamaomao. Kuanu'uanu was summoned back to his liege Keawenuiaumi before Pakaûa's birth. Pakaûa was then raised by Laûamaomao and her elder brother Maûilou, who Pakaûa was told was his father. Pakaûa however questioned this, because despite his young age, he was much taller than Maûilou.
He then went traveling with the king of Kauaûi, Paiûea, to the other Hawaiian Islands, taking the Gord of Laûamaomao, which gave him control over the many winds of Hawaii.
He later served under Keawenuiaumi and taught his son Ku-a-Pakaûa to follow in his footsteps.
