In shogi, the Pac-Man (ãÂÂãÂÂã¯ãÂÂã³ pakkuman or 4Ã¥ÂÂæ©ãÂÂãÂÂã¯ãÂÂã³ yon-yon-fu pakkuman) is a trap opening.
It is named after the video game Pac-Man.
The opening was called 4Ã¥ÂÂæ©ãÂÂãÂÂã¯ãª yon-yon-fu pakkuri on the NHK shogi television show Shogi Focus (å°Âæ£ÂãÂÂã©ã¼ã«ã¹) to avoid use of the trademark.
The opening has an early pawn gambit made by White on the fourth file which may be metaphorically eaten by Black's bishop as if by Pac-Man. If Black takes the pawn with their bishop without careful thought, then the trap may succeed.
Six professional shogi players â Yoshiharu Habu, Yasumitsu Satà Â, Toshiyuki Moriuchi, Kà Âji Tanigawa, Akira Watanabe, Takeshi Fujii â agreed that the opening puts White at a disadvantage.
From the second diagram, â³95 Bishop becomes the winning move for Black. In response to this check, â²68 Gold or â²48 King will eliminate the rook's side effect, and â³88 Bishop Promote will take the silver. â²77 Silver will also move up, but â³77 Bishop Right Promote â²Same Knight â³Same Bishop Promote â²68 Gold â³99 Horse (Diagram 3) will result in Black winning.
