Omoikane (æÂÂå ¼ or æÂÂéÂÂ) is a Shinto Kami of wisdom and intelligence. His name means "having the wisdom and thoughtfulness of many people". A heavenly deity who is called upon to "ponder" and give good counsel in the deliberations of the heavenly deities. In the myth where Amaterasu hid in a cave, he was entrusted with the task of finding a way to get her out. Carpenters pray to him during the construction of pillars in a building. Usually, Japanese people pray to Omoikane for success in school and exams.
He is known by other names as Tokoyo-no-Omoikane (常ä¸ÂæÂÂéÂÂç¥Â) in the Kojiki (å¤äºÂè¨Â); Omoikane (æÂÂå ¼ç¥Â) in the Nihon Shoki (æ¥澸ç´Â); Omokane (æÂÂéÂÂç¥Â, æÂÂå ¼ç¥Â), Tokoyo-no-Omoikane (常ä¸ÂæÂÂéÂÂç¥Â), Yagokoro-omoikane (å «æÂÂæÂÂå ¼ç¥Â, å «æÂÂæÂÂéÂÂç¥Â) in the Kujiki (æ§äºÂç´ or Sendai Kuji Hongi å Â代æ§äºÂæ¬ç´Â), or Achihiko (é¿æº彦).
He is the son of creator deity Takamimusubi (é«Â御ç£巣æÂ¥ç¥Â) and the older brother of Takuhatachiji-hime (栲幡åÂÂÃ¥ÂÂ姫å½, or commonly named in the Kojiki: ä¸Â幡è±Âç§Â津師æ¯Â売å½ Yorozuhatatoyo'akitsushi-hime), who is married to the deity Ame-no-Oshihomimi (天å¿Âç©Âè³å½). In the Kojiki Tenson kà Ârin myth, Omoikane is one of the kami who descends to earth.
However, in the Kujiki (æ§äºÂç´ or Sendai Kyuji Hongi å Â代æ§äºÂæ¬ç´Â). Omoikane descends to Shinano Province (ä¿¡æ¿Âå½ Shinano-no-kuni, a former province that is now Nagano Prefecture) to become the ancestor of Shina-no-achihouri (ä¿¡ä¹Âé¿æºç¥Â) and as in Chichibu Province (çÂ¥ã 夫å½, Chichibu no kuni), a former province in Saitama Prefecture. He then becomes the father of both deities, Ame-no-Uwaharu (天表æÂ¥å½) and Ame-no-Shitaharu (天ä¸ÂæÂ¥å½), also through this lineage becomes the patriarchal ancestor of the children of Ama-no-Koyane (天å Âå±Âå½, 天å Âå±Âæ ¹å½).
