Nama (pronounced [ÃÂnÃÂmÃÂ], or Noraia) is a Yam language spoken in Western Province, Papua New Guinea.
Phonology
Consonants
- Sounds /p/ and /á÷/ only occur marginally<sup>[elaboration needed]</sup>.
- Sounds /t, d, â¿d/ may range in articulation, varying from dental [tê, dê, â¿dê] to alveolar [t, d, â¿d].
- /r/ can be heard as a tap [þ] when in rapid speech and in consonant clusters.
- /ø/ can become voiced as [ò] when intervocalically or word-finally.
- /ã/ can also be heard as [ð] in some contexts<sup>[what contexts?]</sup>.
- Sounds /n, r/ can occur as geminates [nÃÂ, rÃÂ].
Vowels
- Sounds /i, o, u/ can be heard as [ê], [ÃÂ], [ÃÂ, ÃÂ] within diphthongs.
