Nguyá» n Huỳnh ÃÂức ( ; 1748âÂÂ1819) was a general and official of the Nguyá» n dynasty of Vietnam.
He served as a general of Nguyá» n ÃÂnh during the Nguyá» n Lords' fight against the Tây Sán rebellion. Nguyá» n ÃÂnh prevailed in 1802 and became Emperor Gia Long, establishing the Nguyá» n dynasty. Duc then served as the viceroy of southern Vietnam during Gia Long's reign.
He was born Huỳnh Tðá»Âng ÃÂức (é»Â祥德). He was awarded with the National family name Nguyá» n for his deeds and valour. Since then, he has a double surname of Nguyá» n Huỳnh. Nguyá» n Huỳnh ÃÂức was born and raised in Cái ÃÂn, Trðá»Âng Khánh village, ÃÂá»Ânh Viá» n prefecture, Long Há» camp (now Khánh HáºÂu ward, Tân An city, Long An province).
He came from a family of military officials. His paternal-grandfather Huỳnh Châu, and his father Huỳnh Lðáng both served under the Nguyá» n Lords and were appointed Captains. In 1731, under the command of General Trðáng Phðá»Âc Vénh, his grandfather and father participated in the suppression of Sá Tá»Ât rebellion. The king of Chenla was frightened by the suppression of the rebellion, and as the result, he gifted lord Nguyá» n Phúc Chu the lands of Peam Mesar (Mỹ Tho), and Longhôr (Vénh Long). To better control and defend the new lands, the Nguyá» n lord allowed the establishment of prefecture ÃÂá»Ânh Viá» n, and Long Há» camp. Civil and military officials were designated to the areas, followed by many Vietnamese to colonize the wild lands. Since then, Nguyá» n Huỳnh ÃÂức's family had stayed, worked the land, and established themselves there in his birthplace.
