Navy Blue (Charlotte Lawrence song)

"Navy Blue" is a song by American singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, released through Atlantic and Gold Tooth Records on September 27, 2019.

Background

Following her single "Why Do You Love Me", Lawrence released "Navy Blue", continuing to explore darker emotional themes through a refined sonic palette. The song opens with a delicate guitar melody layered beneath Lawrence's ethereal vocals, gradually building toward a bass-heavy chorus. The song was written by Lawrence alongside Andrew Watt, Ryan Tedder, Charlie Puth, and Ali Tamposi. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor also has a songwriting credit as the song samples the 1994 Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt".

Promotion

To promote the song, Lawrence appeared in the Music Box performance series, delivering a stripped-down live rendition of the single. As part of the session, she also performed her major label debut "Why Do You Love Me". Lawrence further supported the release of "Navy Blue" with live tour dates in the United Kingdom, including stops at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire and Gorilla in Manchester.

Composition

The song opens with a delicate guitar melody layered beneath Lawrence's ethereal vocals, gradually building toward a bass-heavy chorus. Its lyrically introspective tone—featuring lines like "We've got delusions of a grand oblivion / we're only happy when we're higher than the sun"—reflects a romantically nihilistic perspective and signals a deepening maturity in her songwriting. Ones to Watch noted that the track "excels in the way it directly juxtaposes its softest and most heart-pounding moment", highlighting Lawrencems ethereal vocal delivery.
