Má¹Âgaà Âirà(also spelled MrÃÂ¥gaà Âërá¹£a; Devanagari: à ¤®à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¥Âà ¤°à ¥Âà ¤·) is the 5th naká¹£atra or lunar mansion as used in Hindu astronomy and astrology, in the constellation Orion. It corresponds to the stars û, ÃÂ1, and ÃÂ2 Orionis. Its position is described in the Surya SiddhÃÂnta.
The asterism's names in various languages are:
The first two pada (quarters) of this naká¹£atra are part of Vá¹Âá¹£abha RÃÂà Âi (Devanagari: à ¤µà ¥Âà ¤·à ¤Â), which is Taurus. The latter two pada of this star belong to Mithuna RÃÂà Âi (Devanagari: à ¤®à ¤¿à ¤¥à ¥Âà ¤¨), which is Gemini (from 23ð20â Taurus to 6ð40â Gemini).
The term Má¹Âgaà Âira (à ¤®à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¤¿à ¤°) means "the deer's head"; it is a composite of two Sanskrit words, má¹Âga (à ¤®à ¥Âà ¤Â) meaning deer and à Âira (à ¤¶à ¤¿à ¤°) meaning head or precisely, the top of the head.
The names Má¹Âgaà Âira (à ¤®à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¤¿à ¤°) and MÃÂrgaà Âërá¹£a/Má¹Âgaà Âërá¹£a (à ¤®à ¤¾à ¤°à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¥Âà ¤°à ¥Âà ¤·) are sometimes used interchangeably. Grammatically, MÃÂrgaà Âërá¹£a (à ¤®à ¤¾à ¤°à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¥Âà ¤°à ¥Âà ¤·) means "of Má¹Âgaà Âira" or "related to Má¹Âgaà Âira". Thus Má¹Âgaà Âira (à ¤®à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¤¿à ¤°) is the correct name of the asterism, while MÃÂrgaà Âërá¹£a (à ¤®à ¤¾à ¤°à ¥Âà ¤Âà ¤¶à ¥Âà ¤°à ¥Âà ¤·) is the name of the month related to Má¹Âgaà Âira, i.e., the month in which the Moon is in conjunction with the Má¹Âgaà Âira naká¹£atra. In Malayalam it is called Makayeeram.
Under the traditional Hindu principle of naming individuals according to their naká¹£atras, the following Sanskrit syllables correspond with this naká¹£atra, and would belong at the beginning of a first name:
Má¹Âgaà Âira naká¹£atra extends from after 23ð20' in Vá¹Âá¹£abha RÃÂà Âi up to 6ð40' in Mithuna. This Star is ruled by Mangala and the presiding deity is Chandra, the Moon God. He holds Amrita (nectar of immortality) and his mount is a chariot drawn by horses. He rules the following parts of the human body: the face, chin, cheeks, larynx, palate, throat, vocal chord, arms, shoulders, thymus gland, upper ribs.
The word má¹Âga represents forests, gardens, a search, a seeking to find, to roam about in forests and a hunter, to seek to blaze the trail, a guide and preceptor. Má¹Âgaà Âirá¹£a is partly in Vá¹Âá¹£abha and partly in Mithuna. It conveys the ideas of searching for beautiful faces, visit or request a girl in marriage. People born in this naká¹£atra have a strong body and moderate complexion.
