Geography

Modno is located northeast of Ustyuzhna (the district's administrative centre) by road. Plotichye is the nearest rural locality.

Modno is located on a high, steep sandy bank along the right bank of the Mologa River in Ustyuzhensky District within Vologda Oblast. It lies close to where the Mologa meets its smaller tributary, the Modenka River, which flows into the main river beneath the site of a former monastery. This riverside setting creates a striking landscape with a broad floodplain, deep waters, and a fast current, features that historically improved the area’s natural defenses. The village is surrounded on three sides by extensive pine forests (sosnovye bory), with gently rolling terrain rich in wildlife, berries, and mushrooms, making it one of the most scenic areas in the district.

As a small rural locality, Modno comprises only four streets and has limited infrastructure, reinforcing its identity as a quiet village surrounded by forest. The name “Modno” is derived from the nearby Modenka River; in the Vepsian language, spoken by indigenous populations of the region, the term translates to “burbot,” a type of fish commonly found in local waters, highlighting the area’s close connection to its river systems.
