As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 1,714 and a density of 22.60 persons per km<sup>2</sup>. The total area was 75.85 km<sup>2</sup>.
On March 20, 2006, Mikawa, along with the towns of Kuga, Miwa, Nishiki, Shà «tà  and Yà «, and the village of Hongà  (all from Kuga District), was merged into the expanded city of Iwakuni.
