Mico (singer)

Jose Miguel Veloso, known professionally as Mico (stylized as MICO), is a Filipino-Canadian singer, songwriter, and recording artist from Toronto, Ontario. His music blends alt-pop, pop-punk, and indie rock, and he first gained traction through independent online releases before receiving a Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2026.

Early life

Veloso was born in Toronto to Filipino parents. He grew up listening to his father's music collection, which included early‑2000s pop-punk and rock bands that later shaped his sound. At sixteen he began singing on Discord servers and streaming on Twitch, building an audience that followed his first self‑released tracks.

Career

Mico released his debut single, “Who Do You Love,” in 2019. His first EP, 21st Century Heartbreak, arrived in 2020, followed by a steady output of independent projects. In 2022 the single “cut my hair” became a top‑20 radio hit in Canada, expanding his reach beyond his online fanbase.

He continued releasing music prolifically, with the EPs second thoughts (2022), the tears we fight EP and the afterparty EP (both 2023). His fifth EP, Internet hometown hero (2024), was supported by the sold‑out Cancel Your Plans tour across North America. A deluxe edition, Internet hometown hero (+DLC), followed in May 2025.

In 2025 Mico completed his first sold‑out European tour and made his major festival debut at Lollapalooza Berlin. That November he was announced as a nominee for Breakthrough Artist or Group of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2026.

Musical style and influences

Mico's music combines pop-punk, alt-pop, and indie rock, with lyrics centered on mental health, relationships, and young adulthood. Critics have noted the influence of 2000s pop-punk bands alongside contemporary artists such as 5 Seconds of Summer and Jeremy Zucker.
