- Eupnea â normal breathing
- Apnea â absence of breathing
- Bradypnea â decreased breathing rate
- Dyspnea or shortness of breath â sensation of respiratory distress
- Hyperaeration/Hyperinflation â increased lung volume
- Hyperpnea â fast and deep breathing
- Hyperventilation â increased breathing that causes CO<sub>2</sub> loss
- Hypopnea â slow and shallow breathing
- Hypoventilation â decreased breathing that causes CO<sub>2</sub> gain
- Labored breathing â physical presentation of respiratory distress
- Tachypnea â increased breathing rate
- Orthopnea â Breathlessness in lying down position relieved by sitting up or standing
- Platypnea â Breathlessness when seated or standing, relieved by lying flat
- Trepopnea â Breathlessness when lying flat relieved by lying in a lateral position
- Ponopnea â Painful breathing
