List of non-UN peacekeeping missions

Below is a list of current, historical and proposed peacekeeping missions which were not managed directly by the United Nations, though some are authorised by, and report to, the United Nations Security Council.

African Union

Active

• AUSSOM is the African Union force in Somalia since January 2025 in response to the War in Somalia.

Completed

• AMIB in Burundi between 2003 and 2004.
• AMIS was the African Union force in Darfur, Sudan starting August 2004 in response to the Darfur Conflict. It merged with UNAMID, a UN-mandated peacekeeping force deployed in Darfur, in December 2007.
• MISCA is the African Union force in the Central African Republic between 2011 and 2014 in response to the Central African Republic conflict under the Djotodia administration.
• ATMIS was the African Union force in Somalia deployed in April 2022 in response to the War in Somalia.

Commonwealth of Nations

Completed

• Commonwealth Monitoring Force in Rhodesia between January 1st 1979 to the 31st of December 1980.

East African Community

Completed

• East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) in the Democratic Republic of Congo between 2022 and December 2023.

ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) is a multilateral armed force deployed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). An ECOWAS Standby Force has also been deployed.

• Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (SSMGB) 2022-present

Completed

• End the First (ECOMOG) and Second Liberian Civil Wars (ECOMIL), 1990–1995 and 2003 respectively.
• End the Sierra Leone Civil War, 1997-2000. The Organisation of African Unity endorsed the Nigerian-led West African peacekeeping force in 1998.
• Guinea-Bissau in 1999
• Guinea/Liberia border in 2001.

European Union

Active

• Operation Althea is an EU multinational force that took over responsibilities from SFOR in 2004 to maintain peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, primarily by overseeing the Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
• European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia is a civilian EU mission that enforces the 2008 ceasefire agreement that ended the Russo-Georgian War.
• European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo is a civilian EU mission that currently monitors Kosovo–Serbia relations and oversees the judicial system in Kosovo, with residual law enforcement authority via an attached Polish Formed Police Unit.

• Operation Artemis in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2003
• EUFOR RD Congo in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2006
• EUFOR Tchad/RCA In Chad and the Central African Republic between 2008 and 2009
• EUFOR RCA in the Central African Republic between 2014 and 2015

NATO

Active

• KFOR is a NATO-led multinational force responsible for establishing and maintaining security in Kosovo. This peace-enforcement force entered Kosovo on June 12, 1999 under a United Nations mandate, two days after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, but it is not a United Nations blue helmeted peacekeeping mission.

• IFOR was a NATO-led multinational force that took over responsibilities from UNPROFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1995–1996.
• SFOR was a NATO-led multinational force that took over responsibilities from IFOR, 1996–2004.
• ISAF was a NATO-led multinational force that performed peacekeeping in Afghanistan, 2001–2014. (see also UNAMA)
• RS was a NATO-led multinational force that performs train, advise and assist missions in Afghanistan from December 2014-July 2021. (see also UNAMA)

OSCE

Completed

• Kosovo Verification Mission an OSCE mission in Kosovo between 1998 and 1999.
• OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine in Ukraine between 2014 and 2022.

SADC

Active

• SADC Mission in Mozambique in Mozambique since July 2021.

Completed

• SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Democratic Republic of Congo between December 2023 and March 2025.

Others

Active

• Multinational Force and Observers on the Sinai Peninsula mandated on April 25, 1982 continues to observe compliance with the Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace. It is an observation organisation not an occupation but it does place some restrictions on the sovereignty of the area it observes.
• Joint Control Commission in Transnistria since 1992
• Nonviolent Peaceforce is a private, unarmed non-profit, which as of 2017 had ongoing operations in the Philippines, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Syria.
• Gang Suppression Force in Haiti since October 2025. Known as the Multinational Security Support Mission between 2024 and 2025.
• Civil-Military Coordination Center for the Gaza Strip since October 2025
• International Stabilization Force in the Gaza Strip, mandated in November 2025

Completed

• Multinational Force in Lebanon in Lebanon between 1982 and 1984.
• Caribbean Peace Force - A 350-member peacekeeping force formed by Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis operating in Grenada from October 1983 to June 1985 after the Invasion of Grenada.
• Joint Control Commission for Georgian–Ossetian Conflict Resolution between 1992 and 2008.
• Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) - Indian peacekeeping operations in Sri Lanka between 1987 and 1990.
• Temporary International Presence in Hebron, a civilian observer mission in Hebron, West Bank between 1994 and 2019.
• South Pacific Peacekeeping Force in Bougainville in 1994.
• International Force East Timor (INTERFET), multinational peacekeeping force in East Timor between 1999 and 2000.
• Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands in the Solomon Islands, July 2003-June 2017.
• Operation Astute in Timor-Leste, May 2006-May 2013.
• Idlib demilitarization, agreement between Russia and Turkey between 2018 and 2019
• Northern Syria Buffer Zone, enforced by the United States Armed Forces in Syria in 2019
• Second Northern Syria Buffer Zone, a buffer zone enforced by the Syrian Army and Russian Military Police between 2019 and 2024
• Peacekeeping operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, Russian peacekeeping operations in Nagorno-Karabakh between 2020 and 2024

Proposed

• Multinational Force – Ukraine, proposed in May 2025
