North Teke language

North Teke, or Tɛgɛ (Tege, Teghe, Itege), is a member of the Teke languages dialect continuum of the Congolese plateau.

Phonology

Consonants

  • /b/ can also be heard as [ɓ] in free variation.
  • /É¡/ can be heard as [É£] when in between vowels.
  • Sounds /d͡ʒ, ⁿt͡ʃ, ⁿd͡ʒ/ can also be heard as alveolar [dÍ¡z, ⁿtÍ¡s, ⁿdÍ¡z] in free variation.
  • The following sounds can be labialized as [bÊ·, kÊ·, fÊ·, sÊ·, dÍ¡zÊ·, ɲʷ, lÊ·, mÊ·, ᵐbÊ·, ⁿt͡ʃʷ, ⁿd͡ʒʷ, ᵑkÊ·, ᵑɡʷ].
  • The labialized sounds /kÊ·, ᵑkÊ·/ can also be heard as [kÍ¡p, ᵑkÍ¡p].
  • The following sounds can be palatalized as [pʲ, bʲ, kʲ, fʲ, sʲ, tÍ¡sʲ, lʲ, mʲ, ᵐpʲ, ᵐbʲ, ⁿt͡ʃʲ].

Vowels

  • Sounds /i, a, u/ can be heard as [ɪ, ə, ʊ] in lax position.
