Kwahu East District is one of the thirty-three districts in the Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally, it was formerly part of the then-larger Kwahu South District in 1988, which was created from the former Kwahu District Council, until the northwest part of the district was split off to create Kwahu East District on 29 February 2008 (although it was announced by the NPP government led by President John Kufuor in October 2007). The district assembly is located in the western part of the Eastern Region and has Abetifi as its capital town.
The location of the district positions it within a transitional belt between forest and savanna environments, shaping its identity as largely agrarian. Its administrative capital, Abetifi, functions as the central hub, linking the district to wider regional networks.
Covering about 675.1 kmò according to geospatial estimates from the Ghana Statistical Service, though some official sources report roughly 860 kmò, the district's size reflects possible discrepancies in measurement approaches that may require clarification through updated surveys. It is bordered by Kwahu North District to the east, Kwahu South District to the south, Fanteakwa District to the southeast, and Asante-Akim North Municipal to the north, outlining its position within the Eastern Region's administrative structure.
