The Old Norse name ' was a shortening of ', from , the name of an Irish king whose daughter Melkorka (Old Irish ', "servant of Curcach") was brought to Iceland as a slave. The Irish name Muirchertach, meaning "mariner", is modernised to ', anglicised as Murtagh.
