Karyes, Ioannina

Karyes (, before 1927: Μογγλιούς, Monglious) is a settlement in the Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece.

Name

In the late 19th century scholar Ioannis Lambridis wrote the placename as Monglioi and described it as a 'cloudy place'. The toponym is a feminine form derived from the andronym Moungouliou, stemming from the utterance of the prepositional form in Greek sts muŋgl'us (or stis Moungoulious) which is a prepositional accusative plural form in the masculine gender (stous Moungoulious) where the form became Mounglioi.

The adverbial Moungouliou is formed from the surname Moungoulis and the adverbial suffix -ou. The surname Moungoulis is either derived from the surname Moungos and the anthroponymic diminutive suffix -oulis or from the surname Mengoulis, stemming from the Albanian word mjegull/ë, -a 'fog' with the change of e into u by the influence of the neighbouring labial m through labialisation.

Demographics

The village is inhabited by Greeks.
