Joanne Davies

Joanne Davies (born 10 September 1972) is a former English badminton player, who competed internationally in the 1990s and early 2000s. She specialized in women's doubles and mixed doubles events, capping 44 times for England and reaching No. 8 in the World.

Early life

She lived on Yarborough Road in Grimsby, and attended the Whitgift School.

Career

She first gained notoriety in 1991, partnering with Simon Archer to win the bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the European Championships. Over the next decade, Joanne played as a representative for England in 44 matches, winning three mixed doubles and nine women's double IBF International events. Davies was the English National runner-up with her doubles partner, Nichola Beck, during the 1995 English National Championships.

She won the silver medal in the mixed doubles, partnering with Nathan Robertson at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games in 1998. She would also win gold in the women's team event there. She represented Great Britain at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia, competing with Sara Hardaker in the women's doubles. Prior to the Olympics, the pair won the Canadian IBF International tournament. At the Olympics, the pair beat the Indonesian team in the first round, before conceding to the South Korean team in the following round. Davies was 11 weeks pregnant while competing in Sydney. Davies would later marry former Dutch national badminton player Jurgen van Leeuwen. Her son, Ethan van Leeuwen, also played badminton.
