Makishi was born in Shuri, the capital of Ryà «kyà «. He studied in Kokugaku (å½å¦ the Royal Academy of Ryà «kyà «) in his early years. In 1838, he traveled to China to study, and stayed in Beijing for several years. When he came back to Ryà «kyà «, he learned English from Aniya Seiho (å®Âä»Âå± æÂ¿è¼Â). He was then appointed Ikoku Tsà «ji (ç°å½éÂÂè©Â, the diplomat towards Western countries) in 1844.
