Hyeja (Japanese: ) was the first priest who came across the sea from Goguryeo to Japan in the Asuka period, 595. He was a tutor of Buddhism to Shà Âtoku Taishi.
He propagated Buddhism in Japan. He lived at Hà Âkà Â-ji (æ³ÂèÂÂ寺 Hà Âkà  temple), currently Ango-in (å®Âå± é¢) or Asuka-dera (é£Â鳥寺 Asuka temple), with priest Esà  who came from Baekje. They were called "Sanpà  no Tà Âryà Â" (ä¸Âå®Âã®æ£Â梠The leader of three treasures).
In 615, he went back to the home country, Goguryeo, with an annotated book of the Buddhist scriptures, which was written by Shà Âtoku Taishi.
He heard the news that Shà Âtoku Taishi died on February 22, 622. He grieved very much and took an oath of meeting Shà Âtoku Taishi again in the Pure Land (æµÂå celestial realm) on the same day of next year. He achieved an oath.
