As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 3,759 and a population density of 18.42 persons per km<sup>2</sup>. The total area was 204.06 km<sup>2</sup>.
On May 1, 2005, Hongà «, along with the village of Ryà «jin (from Hidaka District), the town of Nakahechi, and the village of à Âtà  (both from Nishimuro District), was merged into the expanded city of Tanabe.
