Arisaka was born in Kure, Hiroshima, and graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University in 1931. He specialized in Historical Japanese phonology and Historical Chinese phonology, making important contributions to the studies of JÃ Âdai Tokushu Kanazukai and Middle Chinese.
