Helafricanus hastatus was originally described by Wesoà Âowska in 1986 from Melville Koppies in Gauteng as a member of Heliophanus. The species was redescribed by Wesoà Âowska in 2003 and transferred to Helafricanus by Wesoà Âowska in 2024.
