Halit Balamir

Halit Balamir (1922 – 2 March 2009) was a Turkish freestyle wrestler. He won the silver medal in the men's freestyle flyweight event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.

Career

Balamir was born in Gümüşhane in 1922. The 1948 Summer Olympics were the only Olympic Games of his career. In the men's freestyle 52 kg tournament, he lost by split decision to Finland's Lenni Viitala in the first round, then defeated France's Roland Baudric by unanimous decision in the second round. In the third round, he pinned Sweden's Thure Johansson, and in the fourth round he defeated Iran's Mansour Raisi by unanimous decision. Balamir received a bye in the final round and finished the tournament with the silver medal, behind Viitala and ahead of Johansson.

Balamir died on 2 March 2009 in Ankara after suffering a heart attack.
