Haldar

Haldar or Halder () is a native Bengali surname, found among the Bengali people of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh. The surname is commonly used by various Bengali castes such as Gandhabanik, Baishya Kapali, Namasudra, Mahishya, Kaibarta, Sadgop, Barujibi, Karmakar, Tantubanik, Poundra, Tili, Byghra Kshatriya, Brahmin etc.

Definition

Indian (West Bengal) and Bangladeshi (also spelled Haldar): probably from Sanskrit haladhara ‘one who holds a plow’, an epithet of the god Balarama, brother of Krishna. Balarama is said to have used a weapon shaped like a plowshare, just like Sikdar, Tarafdar, Dastidar, etc.

The surname can be found among both Bengali Hindus and Muslims.
