Writing and composing

Golden Lotus

Chiang wrote the book, music and lyrics for Golden Lotus, a musical adaptation of Jin Ping Mei. The stage production had its world premiere in Hong Kong.

A filmed version of the Hong Kong production has been presented as a feature-length musical film at international film festivals. In 2024 the film became available on the Stratford Festival’s streaming platform Stratfest@Home. Local media in Ontario have reported on its festival awards and on Chiang’s role in creating the musical and film.

Children’s books

Chiang wrote the illustrated chapter book The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing (2017). The story is inspired by a historical Chinese Canadian figure from British Columbia.

A sequel, The Pioneer Adventures of Chen Sing, was also reviewed in Foreword Reviews.

In 2024 Orca Book Publishers released The Longest Shot: How Larry Kwong Changed the Face of Hockey, co-written by Chiang and educator Chad Soon, with illustrations by Amy Qi. The book tells the story of Larry Kwong, the first player of Asian descent to appear in the National Hockey League, and places his career in the context of Canadian social and sports history.
