List of components of the U.S. Department of Defense

The chain of command of the U.S. Department of Defense leads from the president (as commander-in-chief) through the secretary of defense down to the newest recruits. The Department of Defense oversees a complex structure of joint command and control functions, split generally into administrative and operational chains of command.
